The Auto Service Association recently released the results of their first “How’s My Business” survey, in three years. This survey, which asks ASA members about the results of their shops for the last six months, had an entire page dedicated to technician training.
A few statistics from the survey:
- -56% of shops said each technician at their shop averaged over 16 hours of training annually
- -52% said that technicians average over 10 hours of in-person training annually
- -58% said owners and managers received over 16 hours of annual training
The amount of software involved in vehicles, and the electronics supporting that software, is accelerating more rapidly than ever. Because of this, even highly experienced technicians require regular training to keep up to date. Encouraging your technicians to attend regular training sessions (and requiring it if necessary) could be the difference between getting a repair right the first time or developing a reputation for failed repairs.
Are you providing your technicians with the training time they need to be successful? With the technician shortage shops are facing, it’s difficult to spare the time required to keep your technicians up to date. But the alternative is far worse – technology is changing so quickly that it’s more important than ever to keep up-to-date on repair skills.
