Change Your Provider, Keep Your Web Address!

Dec 9, 2017

One of the things that repair shops worry about when they join us is that they’ll lose their domain name when we start managing their website.  A domain name is the web address of your shop – for instance, www.KennedyAutoSolutions.com.

Good news – taking a website down doesn’t mean you lose your domain name!  Your customers won’t have to change anything about how they find you on the web the day we make your new website live.

A domain name is called a “web address” because it is the computer equivalent of a house or business address.  Once you have someone’s address, you can look at a map to figure out how to get there.  That’s exactly how a domain name works; once you type in a domain name into Chrome or Internet Explorer, it looks at a map called the Domain Name System to figure out which computer is storing your website’s data.

When you decide to join us for service, your website’s data will be stored on a different computer, but that doesn’t change the way users will access your website.  We’ll work with you to make sure that the computer map is updated – when someone types in your domain name, they’ll still reach the right computer with your website.  Updating this map is a simple process for the person who owns the domain name, and we can take care of it quickly.

Also, if you’re already searching well, you’re not going to stop searching well – Google knows that your domain name had a great reputation, and they’re not going to heavily penalize you simply because you decided to renovate your business’s website to bring it up to date.  That would serve their own interests – Google wants the sites they are providing to their searchers to be kept modern and up-to-date.

So great news – if you’re worried about losing your domain name when you’re switching providers, that’s one less thing you have to worry about!
