Google: The Giant Search Engine Explained

We have all heard “Google” a million times. But how can this search engine actually help you grow your business? Here’s how search engines are designed to get you business, and how important they are for your shop.


What is Google?

You’ve heard of the Yellowbook, a huge book full of local business phone numbers that everyone now uses as their kid’s highchair. Well Google is the modern day Yellowbook. It is a giant online directory that pulls relevant information from different websites all over the web. Users can type in certain “keywords” or “keyphrases” to learn something new, get directions, or to find an auto repair shop to get their vehicle repaired. Google is used by 70% of search engine users, and is also one of the top five most popular websites in the world. So when your customers go online they are most likely on Google.  Google makes it easy for them to find what they are looking for just by typing in a couple of words and clicking “Search”.


How do my customers use Google?

When your customers go to Google they are either going to enter in keywords or keyphrases. For example, let’s say their brakes are squealing and they need to get them repaired. Their keyphrase might be “brake repair in Raleigh”. Google will then give them results for the closest and most relevant automotive repair shops in the area. Your customers will then contact those shops who are higher in the search results with great customer reviews.

You should be posting and reminding customers that you exist- because one day they will need your services. The New Facebook News Feed Algorithm

On your Facebook News feed you see lots of information. Some of the information you care about and other information you choose to ignore. According to Lars Backstrom, Engineering Manager for Facebook’s News Feed Ranking, “The average user’s Facebook News Feed has around 1,500 stories throughout the day.” The amount of stories you actually see is around 20%.

Facebook’s goal for the News Feed is to give you an experience similar to a newspaper, so you can read stories that concern you. They want to highlight the stories that they feel users will enjoy the most. Their process of doing this involves assigning a score to each story and the stories with the highest score go to the top.

Scoring Factors:

  • Relationship with the User
  • Number of Comments
  • Number of Likes
  • Number of Shares

The Changes:

  • “Story Bumping” – Older stories that were posted earlier in the day that may have not been seen will join the new stories at the top of your feed when you refresh your page. Facebook is hoping to increase user engagement by not hiding less relevant content.
  • The algorithm also looks at the last 50 interactions and will give the story a higher importance rating on the pages and friends you’ve interacted with recently.

Accurate Business Information Is Important to Search Engines and Your Customers!

Name, Address, and Phone Number might appear to be the most remedial of SEO tasks, but you will not believe how many businesses drop the ball on their very own listing.  Search engines appreciate accurate information, and if you can list your Name, Address, and Phone Number, you will be rewarded.  If you can’t, well, let’s just say you will be punished!


I know it sounds simple, but please state the name of your business.  “The Name of my business is (fill in the blank).  The Name of my business is Website Help.  On the front of my store, it says “Website Help.”  On my business cards, it says “Website Help.”  On my answering machine, it says “Website Help.”  You get the point?  Whatever you named your business, simply use it.  So many times we run into situations where a business owner will say the name of his business is “East Coast Solutions.”  You call them up and the phone says, “Hi, you have reached Joe’s where we find east coast solutions for you.  Imagine having a great conversation with someone telling you all about East Coast Solutions, and they give you a business card that reads, “Joe’s.”   This confusion happens all of the time.  Search engines treat them the same way.  They distrust them and punish their search listings.


My business, Website Help, is physically located at 123 Easy Street in Garner, NC.  Anywhere I list my address on the World Wide Web; it should read 123 Easy Street Garner, NC.   I provide a service that can truly help people all over NC and in neighboring states, so how will people in Durham, Raleigh, Apex, Tennessee, Virginia, and South Carolina find me?  The way not to do it is by listing an address for Website Help in Durham, Raleigh, Apex, Tennessee, Virginia, and South Carolina.  If your brick and mortar are at 123 Easy Street Garner, NC then list it as that address.  You confuse Google, Yahoo, Bing, and all the search engines when you try to game the system.  Here is a great way to see how this works:  Invite a stranger to your house, find out where they live, give them your real address, and as a convenience, provide them with an address close to where they live.  It will be easier for them to find you in a place they are familiar with, right?  Absolutely not!  The stranger and even a friend will be extremely confused.  How do you think the search engines react when they see multiple address listings for one business? Just list the address where your shop is located.  If you move, change it!!!


If you want people to reach your business, list a phone number you are willing to make public and more importantly you are willing to answer.  Once you make it public, DO NOT change it.  That is right, do not change the number of your business.   If you opened your business as (555) 555-5555, it should stay (555) 555-5555.  Search engines love accurate, working phone numbers, and people love accurate, working phone numbers BECAUSE they can reach you.

It may sound simple, but check for yourself.  Does your business accurately list one Name, one Address, and one Phone number?  I hope so!

The Top Shop Contest 2013

The contest started on June 3, 2013 and is ongoing till August 30, 2013.
